Patong clubs: Club Lime on Patong Beach Road

Club Lime is a great addition to the Patong clubbing scene, found on Patong Beach Road right besides Rock City opposite the beach.
It can be easily found by the sign -- a huge slice of lime (what else?) -- and its neon interior that lights the street below. And in the early morning hours, the booming, hypnotic sound would be a magnet even for the blind.

This place is a sophisticated sort of 3-in-1 venue: nightclub, bar and restaurant – with very good food. But lets forget about the food: that is for old people! What about the music?

Music is mostly House, Techno or Tribal, played by the club's resident or visiting DJs. Club Lime is also developing a tasty line in drum-and-bass, the only place in Phuket featuring this music.
One can say that the owners of Club Lime try very hard to increase the quality of the music played in Patong, so far with mixed success; guest DJs from Bangkok are regularly on the program and for a while it was even rumored that DJ Tiesto would play there (but he went to play in Bangkok instead, his price tag was well out of line for such a small venue).

Open from 6 pm till late. Thursday’s ladies' night – free entry and a free drink for girls only. On other nights expect to pay 200 baht, or more if there's a special act.

Other have visited too, for example Matt Crook, who had the following to say:
I went to Club Lime for the first time on Friday night. What's good about this place is that it pushes real dance music and the DJs are fairly decent. The music was primarily electro, with a bit of house and tech house to boot. It was real dance floor stuff, although Club Lime doesn’t have much of a dance floor. But still, there is space in front of the bar to dance.

The guys at Club Lime are looking to push clubbing in Phuket to new boundaries. Starting next month, there will be drum ‘n’ bass nights (which I might get involved in) and more DJs will be asked to play.

The only thing with Club Lime is the people who go there. This is something that needs a bit of work. Hopefully a couple of articles I'm writing will drive some actual clubbers to the venue.

At the moment, it feels a bit like Bed Supperclub. Lime is full of old dudes and property sales girls. The sales girls in particular get on my nerves because they do nothing except take pictures of one another and rub their bodies on each other when everybody is looking.
... the last thing would not be all that bad for me personally to witness :-)

Bangkok Dangerous Movie remake with Nicholas Cage

Bangkok Dangerous, starring Nicolas Cage to be released this fall, is a remake of the original Pang Brothers film from 2000. Generally, American remakes of great Asian films don't turn out very well, but with the original directors onboard, and Nicholas doing his nutcase act, this might be a winner.

Here's a short YouTube clip with all the necessary ingredients: strippers on Soi Cowboy, a transvestite review, fast motorcycles, Thai boxing, big guns, and a targeted politician who looks like a slightly older and plumper Abhisit.

Tiger Bar Phi Phi Beach Party

Tiger Bar Phi Phi, located in the center of Phi Phi Island in the village, next to Papaya Restaurant, is one of the most happening bars currently open on Phi Phi. The bar has a dance floor and a DJ playing his sound until the early morning hours. They are also quite active in advertisign their venue on the internet, as for example sending out party messages through their Facebook group; have a look if you are interested!

There is also an upstairs chill out lounge with leather couches to relax on and the bar downstairs will quite happily waiter serve your favorite cocktails directly to your sofa.

Tiger Bar offers a complimentary free drink between 9-11pm and a free bucket between 12-10am every night.

Phuket ladyboys are in demand!

Phuket ladyboy in uniformCasual surfing around the internet brought me to a website purporting to be an escort service for ladyboys on Phuket. Frankly, this seems one of those unnecessary sercives around here where I just cannot grasp the business model.
If you are really inclined to meet a ladyboy in Phuket intimately, there is nothing easier than that (a lot would actually argue that one cannot flee the attention of them even when going out without a romp with a ladyboy in mind): head down to Soi Bangla, and chances are 100% that actually they themselves will try to pick you up.
Or go to the (excellent) Simon Cabaret Show and hang around after the show, this way not everything has to happen all in the open -- but then, if you wish to try a ladyboy you should be sure enough in your sexuality to not be shy about it.

Anyway, here is the website: Phuket ladyboy escort service
"Welcome to our gallery at Ladyboys in Phuket. An exclusive escort service where you will find stunning Thai ladyboys who are waiting to take care of you. We are a very friendly agency, just take a browse at our escort gallery, make your choice and get in touch, very simple."

Less enjoyable their rates, which are quite frankly outrageous (yes, I mean expensive!):

Shortime (2 hours) 5500B
Casual (4 hours) 6000B
Overnight (12 hours) 8500B
Night & day (24 hours) 9000B
2 Nights and days 16,000B
4 Nights and days 30,000B
7 Nights and days 48,000B

You should not forget, if you have this kind of money to spend on something that simple, most likely you will stay in an upmarket hotel.
As they are all in on making money there, you might have to pay some equally outrageous 'joiner fee' to the hotel for your 'overnight guest' (in some cases higher than the fee of the person providing the service, what smells like pimping to me, shame on you, Phuket hotels!).

A word about Simon Cabaret Show on Phuket: this is a very tasteful show of ladyboy performers, singers and dancers, quite on par with the Tiffany or Alcazar Cabaret Shows in Pattaya; actually a place where you can bring your girlfriend or the family and have a great evening. There is no sleaze so it shows the artistic side of the ladyboy life in Thailand -- even though you can still meet a lot of them later in Soi Bangla for as little as a group photo, a drink together or much more...

DJ Tiesto in Bangkok mid-April 2008

Bangkok is not rare in international-rating nightlife events, but that Tiesto is coming to play is really great news. I will not be able to make it, but if you like this kind of music, mark April 17th and 18th in your calendar!

Tiesto is coming to town. If you like DJs - Tiesto is one of the best. On the 17th he is playing at The River and on the 18th he is playing at Club 808.

Phuket webcams: beaches and bars

There are a good number of Phuket webcams out there, that can be roughly classified into two categories: beach cams showing the various beach locations of Phuket island and nightlife webcams, mostly operated by bars in Patong's Soi Bangla area.

Bar smoking ban in Thailand

Dave The Rave muses in his always interesting Bangkok nightlife blog about the reactions to the smoking ban that has come into law recently (and I am not talking about the "I smoke you!" you might hear form the local Thai bar girls).
As always, implementation is sketchy and some a re a lot more 'equal before the law' than others. The smoking ban seems to be a very important issue to some Farang, while other people feel there are bigger problems to deal with.

Soi Cowboy
Down in Soi Cowboy, the smoking ban has been enforced in every bar. Smokers can be seen having a cigarette outside the bars in Soi Cowboy. Some smokers are openly displaying their disdain for the new law. Meanwhile, non-smokers are arguing that it is high time that smoking is banned in all bars right across Thailand. Non-smokers are clearly saying butt out! On the other hand, there are smokers who feel hard done by after all these years.

Nana Plaza
In Nana Plaza, the authorities have not enforced the smoking ban. Non-smokers should be aware of this fact. However, in Angelwitch Go-Go Bar they have banned the Thai staff from smoking inside the bar. This is something of a compromise to the situation. Customers are allowed to smoke in all of the four Rainbow Bars. Therefore, rival go-go bars do not want to lose customers to them. The smoking ban has to be a rule for all if it is going to work.

Regarding the smoking ban issue, I think that non-smokers have a very good argument here. If there is supposed to be a smoking ban, then it should be enforced nationwide. However, we are talking about "Amazing Thailand" where things are definitely not always black and white.I know a few anti-smoking Westerners who feel VERY strongly about this issue. They are bordering on being anti-smoking activists! Hey guys, this is not Farangland! While I do see their argument, some farangs can be intolerable complainers. You can see some of these intense arguments on the chat forums. Do these people not have anything better to do with their time?

Phi Phi bars and nightlife

There is something special about nightlife and the sunset in the Phi Phi Islands. It screams, "pass me a cocktail" and give me the best view you've got. And from both, Phi Phi has plenty to offer the interested traveler.

Some of the bars down on the beaches of Phi Phi have that classic laid back feel especially on Long Beach, Carpe Diem near Phi Phi Villa Resort and Phi Phi View Point bar. Restaurants are varied and special on Phi Phi islands and some of the best restaurants are in the village. The dress is informal at best with many cruising around with same beach clothes makes it very relaxing. The more you like to dress up the more you will want to make your way in to the village. In Laem Tong, the Holiday Inn and Zeavola are more formal.

The Phi Phi bars at night can be wild. There is something on the island which makes for a regular New Year Eve feeling and the nights are brilliant. Watch out for the fliers handed out to announce parties.

Phuket Full Moon

Currently, the full moon is standing high in the sky, giving off an errie lighting for a late evening beach walk -- such as I just did, coming from a few rounds of playing pool in Soi Bangla.

Links of Interest:
However, other than on Koh Phangan, Patong Beach has never managed to organize an event around this natural spectacle, which is a shame, as currently the numbers of tourists on Phuket is higher than maybe ever before and it would be a truly unforgettable rave.

This month it is already too late to go to Koh Phangan for the Full moon Party there, but maybe you came for the nice beaches of Thailand anyway? Especially between the parties, Koh Phangan is a really nice place to have a relaxing week in which you do nothing but listening to the breeze rustling the palm trees behind you while you get a nice suntan.

Expat Wife gets dropped for Thai Girl

I found this interesting E-mail blog from an expat wife who lost her husband and the father of her kids in Bangkok to a Thai woman.. well, to probably more than one.

"He's a night owl and he thinks that me expecting him to stay home when I go to bed at 10 (because I get up at 5:50 with the kids) is absurd. He says hey, we are living in the great urban area, like Greenwich Village, and I am being ridiculous to expect him to be home by 11.
Of course, they don't have bars full of beautiful women there who will give you a BJ for 20 bucks either…..
For a while, I would call him in the middle of the night when I woke up when he still wasn't home. Sometimes he would answer, usually not (loud music being his excuse ) Now I just don't call him at all when this happens….I'm tired of being put in that position and feeling like such a shrill, desperate loser."

Phi Phi Island Image Galleries

Recently, a lot of work has been done on phi-phi.com, the Official Guide for Phi Phi and also the only online resource for many of the cheaper resorts and guteshouses on Phi Phi Island.

Most noteworthy is the large number of galleries that have been added, with a multitude of pictures from the beaches (especially Long Beach), the Phi Phi Viewpoint, scuba diving around Phi Phi, etc.
Besides the "usual" picture postcard views of Phi Phi or Maya Bay, a lot of the photos display streets and shops in the Phi Phi Don Village, so maybe places you have been visiting.Links of Interest:

New Year on Soi Bangla

New Year 2008 on Phuket was a blast; I have never seen better fireworks or more people cluttering up Patong Beach and Soi Bangla. This is truly proof that this season must have been the best on Phuket ever, with hotels being booked already a long time in advance.

Absolute monstrous amounts of people moving through Soi Bangla to the beach:

The fireworks, unluckily a mobile is (still) no real replacement for a camera...:

I spent for sure more than an hour on the beach of Patong, together with other party-goers and watched the show and the people. A pure happy moment and lots of good intentions for the coming year (this blog being one of them)...

The next big event on my personal party calendar will be Thai New Year (Songkran), when Soi Bangla will be transformed in a big waterfighting arena. I actually relish to be as crazy as the next tourist innocent of knowing about the deeper meaning of Songkran and just join in the mayhem...

Russian bar girls and strippers in Pattaya

Pattaya is famous for it's bars and streets filled with Thai girls and ladyboys who seek to entertain foreign tourists. Why would you come here to look for Russian girls?

Believe it or not, but there is a stripclub on Pattaya's infamous Walking Street that is filled with Russian strippers: Galaxy. Officially they are just strippers, but according to a report by Pattaya Daily News Galaxy got raided by the Police and the Russians were doing much more than just dancing in bikinis. If you are into Russian ladies check out this joint. When you walk along Walking Street you will see a big sign for galaxy with a glass booth where the dancers perform for public viewing.

Thailand bar closing times: Alcohol ban slapped on next two weekends

I’m in a state of disbelief about this. The next two weekends will see a nationwide alcohol ban enforced. Whether you’re a local, an expat or a tourist, you won’t be able to buy booze at bars, clubs, stores or anywhere else (expect, apparently, large hotels).

There was talk of this on a few forums recently, but until today – the day before the ban will take effect – there was no official source. Thai Visa was the first to confirm the rumours:
"The first dry days will be 14, 15 and 16 December, pre-election days for a few million Thais who registered to vote early. Thaivisa has been informed that no alcohol is allowed to be served nationwide between Friday 14th at 6pm until Sunday 16th at midnight. Elections on the 23rd will mean no alcohol will be sold from 6pm on the 22nd till midnight on the 23rd of December. Practically this means two or three dry days in the two weekends ahead, although some tourist areas tend to be lenient once it’s past 7pm on election day."
Absolute madness. The fact that it’s been so poorly publicized makes it even worse. It kicks in tomorrow and until today, there’s been mass confusion as to what is going on. I understand the importance of the election, but in a country where campaigners give out Viagra to sway votes, would alcohol really make things any worse?

This disastrous regulation has meant that club owners and promoters in Bangkok have been forced to reschedule high-profile events and change the dates that international acts were set to fly into Thailand.

Sexy Thai karaoke girls

Karaoke is a serious business in Thailand; this is true from the business side, as it is (like all things related to nightlife and prostitution) a big earner for everybody who can stick their finger in the pie. In many cases, karaoke bars have their room right upstairs and upcountry fees payable can be minimal compared to tourist destinations like Phuket.
Then there is the entertainment side; having 'sanook' is a central concept of the Thai lifestyle. This means in most cases, that a whole group of Thai men will go to a karaoke bar, drink as long as they can, sing quite horrible and get entertained by the girls serving in the karaoke. They might be invited to sing for you, but my experiences show that most of them cannot sing that well either.
Typical for the Thai-only nightlife, just a few meters from where I live here on Phuket there are a whole row of such karaoke bars, with a lot of the girls much younger than you would ever expect them to meet in the Farang-oriented bars of Patong. So there is definitely a dark side to this, but as the police cannot demand much payout in those places they will do not much about it (the police station is actually 50 meters down the road)...

And not so long ago, the Thai Culture Minister warned against too much sexy Tghai girl action around local karaoke bars (as if anybody would listen!):

"Action will soon be taken against karaoke bars that seat scantily clad hostesses by the street to attract customers, Culture Watch Centre director Ladda Tangsuphachai said yesterday.
She said women in provocative dresses should remain inside bars. Police in Bangkok and elsewhere would be asked to keep karaoke bars and other entertainment venues in check.
A large number of karaoke bars and similar venues have opened in major Bangkok areas, including Lat Phrao, Pracha Chuen and Charan Sanitwong Road. They employ female staff in provocative attire to hail passing cars.
Ladda said she sympathised with women working in the nightlife industry but added that revealing dresses should not be worn and openly seen in the streets, even though such venues operated late at night.
She said she was following up an instruction given to her by Culture Minister Khaisri Sriaroon and Deputy Education Minister Varakorn Samkoses. She said the Interior Ministry, which gives permits to entertainment venues, may not renew the permits of uncooperative venues.
Ladda said the actions to be taken were similar to those imposed on prostitutes loitering on Bangkok streets and were not meant to affect the venues in terms of profits."

A video from YouTube showing sexy Thai karaoke girls "in action"; have a look quickly, as those materials vanish fast from YouTube:

And a few Thai karaoke girl photos from Asiansweetheart: Somebody had a big night at the karaoke bar. And they were nice enough to snap some photos of the fun and post the shots on one of the forums. There are five shots in the series, including that one above of two of the karaoke girls wrestling on the sofa:

Crazy parties at Phi Phi Reggae Bar

Of all the Phi Phi Island bars, Phi Phi Reggae Bar is the perfect hang-out for people who want to unwind after a long day combing the beach, sunbathing, kayaking or shopping.
At Phi Phi Reggae Bar, you can grab a drink, listen to music and dance the night away. Enjoy recalling the day's adventures and share your experiences with other tourists and friends. Phi Phi Island bars are the perfect end to a day on the Phi Phi beach.

The Reggae Bar, something of a Phi Phi institution, is a large drinking spot with a cast of hundreds. There's a heavy beat laid down, pool tables, and because the place is open-sided, no cigarette fumes. The centerpiece of this bar is its muay Thai (Thai boxing) ring. It's a fairly unique experience to watch two foreigners dressed up as Thai boxers complete with leather headgear go at each other refereed by a tubby Thai official.

One distinctive feature of Phi Phi's nightlife is the many displays of 'buckets' lined up for sale. The ingredients of this one-way ticket to oblivion are: Ice, Red Bull (energy drink), mixer, straws and a half-bottle of spirits. Revelers simply add the Red Bull, mixer and spirits, dig in with their straws and the rest is a rather hazy experience. Prices range from 200 baht for Sang Som (local sugar cane rum) to 500 baht for Jack Daniel's.
Drinking from a bucket on Phi Phi Island

When other Phi Phi Island bars close their doors, Phi Phi Reggae Bar remains open and jumping with action. If what you yearn for is an evening of fun and animated activity, look no further than the Phi Phi Reggae Bar. After all, what would a holiday be without Phi Phi Island bars to melt away the stress and anxieties of everyday life?

Thailand Lifestyle Happy Pills

Most beginnings are not easy... a true statement, more so with this blog. However, this would start my Thailand blog in the wrong spririt right from the beginning.
So, let's start fresh: Life in Thailand is great!

I have been living on the island of Phuket for the last 10 years, a place to life for which many would give an arm and a leg to be in. Working in my own company (with a very flexible schedule) and surrounded by beautiful beaches like Karon, Kata and of course Patong Beach, I have the tropical sun of Thailand all day long, nearly every day of the year.
And at night, life does not stop here, on the contrary. Albeit maybe not as wild as Bangkok or Pattaya, the nightlife of Phuket is famous. One bar after the next filled with young Thai girls awaiting to serve me exotic cocktails and possibly more, if my heart would so desire. To be frank: surely this was one very good reason to stay here, not so much nowadays. Phuket was certainly a great place to spend some wild years, now it is a great place to be in a more stable and settled existence, just letting the hair down now and then (and my girlfriend has her own opinions, after how many drinks the fun reaches the line that shall not be crossed!).
But nevertheless, a great place to be in, have fun, and watch other people have fun; because other than with sorrow, shared fun is definitely double the fun, living your life surrounded by constantly happy people in holiday mood. I wish those only here for a few weeks could pack some of that in their suitcase when they transfer back to the airport and fly home.

So what is this blog really about? I do not have a political message, I do not convert anybody to a new religion or even want to change their habits or thoughts. It is much more -- like most blogs -- a tool to remind myself, that life was great, is great and will be even better the next day, here in Thailand.
And if you, my dear reader, partake in those 'happy thoughts', all the better, because all it would take to be here is to go and buy a flight ticket and hop on the next plane. Or, if this is not possible right at this moment, maybe to know that somewhere there is a place without rain and unhappy people and you could be there if you really, really wished it so. The right medicine for a rainy day or a boring day at the office -- and like all the really good things (never believe the cynics who say otherwise), this little happy pill is FREE.
