General Impressions of Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena or Cartagena de Indias in Colombia was the second port on our cruise. We had high expectations of this city and we were pleased with what we saw. This city is a big with more than a million people. We visited the town with its colourful houses, a cathedral, church of Peter Claver, Inquisitions Palace, some nice squares, Navy museum, dungeons shopping centre and the Fort of San Felipe. Below you can find some pictures of the general impressions in town. Having some doubts about safety in Colombia, our feelings were positive, we never saw any problems and people were friendly. If you speak Spanish, it must be a great location to go on holiday. For all places we visited we could always find people who understood English.

Cartagena or Cartagena de Indias in Colombia was de tweede havenplaats waar de aanlegden op onze cruise. We hadden zeer hoge verwachtingen van deze stad en waren blij met wat we zagen. Het is er zeer druk, een stad met meer dan 1 miljoen inwoners. Op onze tocht vonden we vele kleurvolle huizen, een kathedraal, de kerk van Peter Claver, het Inquisitie Paleis, enkele mooie marktpleintjes, het zeevaartmuseum, het Dugeons winkeldistrict, en het Fort van San Felipe. Hieronder vind je reeds enkele foto's van de stad. Eerst hadden we toch wat twijfel over de veiligheid in Colombia maar onze impressies zijn positief, we hebben nooit problemen gezien en de mensen waren allen vriendelijk. Als je Spaans spreekt moet dit een top locatie zijn om op vakantie te gaan. Op alle plaatsen die wij hebben bezocht vond je steeds mensen die Engels begrepen.

General Impressions, Québec

When we prepared for our trip to Québec, we imagined a small city full of historical buildings. This was not the case, the city has more than half a million inhabitants and looks industrial. The old city part is exactly as you find in the books. Historical houses and monuments give the city a warm feeling, street musicians try to entertain you, and you find flowers and green areas everywhere. Around the old city you still see big parts of the defence wall with canons.

Toen we onze reis naar Québec hebben voorbereid, dachten we dat dit een kleine stad was met vele historische gebouwen. Dit is echter niet het geval, het is een grote industriële stad met meer dan een half miljoen inwoners. Het oude stadsgedeelte daarentegen is exact zoals beschreven in de reisgidsen. De oude huizen en monumenten, geven de stad een warme uitstraling. Andere troeven zoals groene oases met vele bloemperken en straatmuzikanten versterken dit gevoel. Het oude stadsdeel is nog steeds omringd door een verdedigingsmuur met kanonnen.

General Impressions of London

I was very lucky that it was not raining when visiting London. The city has many attractions, historical sites and modern buildings. Many of my next articles will cover the major landmarks. In this article, I would like to show you some pictures of places I found interesting. The St. Paul's cathedral is an impressive church from the outside, the interior is also very special but I was not allowed to take photos. I didn't have time to enter the Tower of London but saw it passing by on the Tower Bridge. After seeing architectural treasures like the Royal Court of Justice you enter the colourful Chinatown and you wonder, is this still London? I enjoyed the 20km walking tour and am fit to participate in the Gartner conference the next day. The conference took place in the Crown Plaza Hotel at Westminster. A great opportunity to build on my skills and listen to experts of the IT and Finance industry.

Ik had geluk dat het niet regende wanneer ik Londen bezocht. De stad heeft veel bezienswaardigheden en moderne gebouwen. Veel van mijn volgende artikelen zullen over de belangrijkste attracties van Londen gaan. In dit artikel wil ik enkele foto's met u delen over de plaatsen die ik interessant vond. De Sint Paul's kathedraal is groots aan de buitenkant, het interieur is fantastisch maar men mocht er geen foto's trekken. Door tijdsgebrek kon ik de Tower van Londen niet bezoeken, maar ik heb wel een foto getrokken van op de Tower Bridge. Na het zien van architecturale schatten zoals het "Royal Court of Justice" wandel je door het kleurvolle Chinatown en denk je, is dit nog wel Londen? De wandeling van 20 kilometer was een leuke ervaring en ik ben er klaar voor, de dag erna deel te nemen aan de Gartner conferentie die plaats vindt in het Westminster Crown Plaza Hotel. Een opportuniteit om mijn vaardigheden aan te scherpen en te luisteren naar de experts uit de IT en financiele wereld.

General Impressions of Stuttgart and the Schloss Park

Stuttgart is a green city. The Schloss parks are so big you could spend hours in them. At the middle point of the city near the Altes Schloss you find the beginning of the park. From there you have a view on the television tower of Stuttgart, which is located in the hills. Walking through the park, you go direction central station where many new buildings have been erected. One of these buildings is the Landesbank (Central Bank) which has a very special entrance via a walking bridge. In the next part of the Schloss park you find many flower beds and fountains.

Stuttgart is een groene stad. Het Schloss park is zo groot dat je er uren kan in doorbrengen. In het hart van de stad, naast het Altes Schloss vind je het begin van het park. Van deze kant heb je een mooi zicht op de televisietoren van Stuttgart. Deze ligt meer zuidelijk in de heuvels. Je zet je wandeling verder richting centraal station waar vele nieuwe moderne gebouwen zijn opgetrokken. Een van deze gebouwen is de Landesbank met zijn zeer speciale loopbrug als ingang. In het volgende deel van het park (midden park) vind je veel bloemen en fonteinen.

General Impressions, Shopping in Frankfurt

In our general impressions article we are focussing on the shopping possibilities in Frankfurt and there are plenty. Next to all the famous brands shops you find stands on the street with food, drinks and candy. Entertainment is available at every corner of the street, take your picture with characters from Star Trek or enjoy the music of good street artists. If you like shopping, Frankfurt is good for you.

In ons algemene indrukken artikel, focussen we vandaag op de vele mogelijkheden om te winkelen in Frankfurt. Naast alle grote merken winkels, vind je ook standjes op straat met eten, snoep en drank. Amusement is te vinden op iedere hoek van de straat, neem je foto met personages uit Star Trek of geniet van muziek van goede straatartiesten. Als je van winkelen houdt is Frankfurt een goede stad voor jou.

General Impressions, Montréal

For us, Montréal is a city with real contrasts between the historic and modern era. Old historic houses and monuments stand side by side with modern buildings. The same counts for transportation, a Lamborghini next to a horse and carriage. It doesn't stop with this clash of time, Chinatown gives you an insight in the Asian culture. The city is full of live and you find many street artists around the harbour.

Voor ons is Montréal de stad met grote contrasten tussen de geschiedenis en het moderne tijdperk. Oude historische huizen en monumenten zij aan zij met moderne gebouwen. Het zelfde geldt voor het transport, een Lamborghini naast een paard met koets. Het stopt niet bij de clash der tijden, Chinatown biedt u ook een inzicht in de Aziatische cultuur. Het is een bruisende stad vol leven, aan de haven vind je veel straatartiesten.

General Impressions of Ottawa

Ottawa, the capital of Canada is a treasury room full of architectural jewels. The city offers a mix of buildings styles, in combination with many green areas. Major attractions like Parliament Hill, the Peace Tower, changing of the guards, the war memorial, the supreme court of justice, the Fairmont Chateau Laurier and the Basilique of the Notre-Dame are not covered in this article. They will follow later. These pictures give you a first glance of Ottawa.

Ottawa, de hoofdstad van Canada is een schatkamer vol juwelen. De stad biedt u een waaier van gebouwen in verschillende stijlen gecombineerd met vele groene oases. De allerbelangrijkste hoogtepunten van de stad zoals, Parliament Hill, de vredestoren, de wisseling van de wacht, het hof van cassatie, het Fairmont kasteel Laurier en de basiliek van de Notre-Dame komen niet aan bod in dit artikel.
