Copley Fairmont Hotel, Boston

On our USA and Canada trip, we visited many Fairmont hotels. This hotel in Boston was for us the most impressive. The hotel opened in 1912. On the pictures you see the reception hall and the Oak Bar. Boston Magazine has awarded the title of best bar of Boston to the Oak Bar. Here, you can enjoy a Martini or cocktails.

Op onze reis naar de Verenigde Staten hebben we veel Fairmont hotels bezocht. Dit hotel in Boston was het meest indrukwekkende. Het opende zijn deuren in 1912. Op de foto's zie je de inkomhal en de "Oak Bar". Boston magazine heeft de "Oak Bar" verkozen als beste bar van Boston. Hier kan je genieten van een cocktail of een martini.

The Quincy Market (Faneuil Hall Marketplace) in Boston is a mall in a historic building where they offer a large food selection. You find many stands with fish, meat, candy, drinks, fruit, cheeses, cakes.... I can really recommend this, everyone finds something they fancy.

Quincy Market (Faneuil Hall Marketplace) in Boston is een markthal in een historisch gebouw waar ze allerlei verschillende snacks aanbieden. Je vindt er veel standen met vlees, vis, snoepgoed, drankjes, fruit, kaas, taarten... Wij kunnen dit aan iedereen aanbevelen, hier vindt iedereen wel iets naar zijn smaak.

Old North Church, Boston

The Old North Church in Boston is the oldest church of the city and dates from 1723. It is located in North End in Salem Street. What is very special about this church with its white wooden interior are the chairs. They are located in wooden boxes that are called pews. In the late 18th century these pews were only for the rich. Wealthy families bought the box pews as a status symbol and could only be used by themselves.

De "Old North Church" (Oude Noordelijke Kerk) in Boston is de oudste kerk van de stad en dateert van 1723. Ze is gelegen in Salem Street. Deze kerk is zeer speciaal omwille van zijn wit houten interieur en stoelen. De zitplaatsen staan in houten boxen die "Pews"noemen. Op het einde van de 18de eeuw waren deze Pews enkel voor de rijken. Ze werden door families gekocht als status symbool en konden enkel door hen worden gebruikt.

Boston is one of the oldest, and for us also one of the most interesting cities of the United States. People are friendly, and the city offers a large choice of different attractions to visit. We added a few pictures of places we didn't describe yet in our other Boston articles.

Boston is 1 van de oudste, en voor ons ook 1 van de meest interessante steden van de Verenigde Staten. Mensen zijn vriendelijk, en de stad biedt u veel verschillende bezienswaardigheden aan. We hebben enkele foto's toegevoegd van plaatsen die we nog niet hebben beschreven in andere Boston Blog artikelen.

The small Trinity Church, Boston

Many of the readers will probably question this blog title. Why start with a "small" church. Well, because this church on Copley square is located alongside its big neighbour, the John Hancock Tower. It makes it a very special view one of the lowest churches next to one of the tallest buildings. The American Institute of Architects has added this church to the list of the 10 most significant buildings in the States.

Veel lezers zullen zich waarschijnlijk vragen stellen bij deze blogtitel. Waarom start je met het woord "kleine" kerk. Wel, omdat deze kerk gelegen op Copley Square, pal naast de enorme John Hancock toren staat. Het zorgt voor een heel speciaal zicht, 1 van de kleinste kerken naast 1 van de hoogste torens. Het American Institute for Architects heeft deze kerk toegevoegd op de lijst van de 10 belangrijkste gebouwen van de Verenigde Staten.

Old South Church, Boston

The Old South Church is located at Copley T station and every Thursday there is a Jazz Worship at 6 pm. This is the 3rd oldest church in Boston. The church community is a member of the United Church of Christ (Protestant) and was founded in 1957. We find the style of the exterior nice with its green dome. The entrance is heavily decorated and the interior warm with many wooden elements. A good church to visit.

De Old South Church ligt aan Copley station en iedere donderdag op 18:00 kan je een Jazz eredienst bijwonen. Het is de 3de oudste kerk van Boston. De kerkgemeenschap is lid van de protestantse United Church of Christ en werd opgericht in 1957. We vinden de stijl van de kerk met zijn groene koepel mooi. De ingang is zwaar versiert en het interieur straalt warmte uit met zijn houten elementen. Een mooie kerk om te bezoeken.

Relaxing trip with Boston Harbor Cruises

With our day pass of "Old Town Trolley Tours" we also received a voucher for a Harbor cruise. On the first picture you can see the city from the top deck of the boat. It was a nice day, very sunny and the ocean was a flat as a mirror. Even Godzilla, the speed boat entered the harbor without making waves. On our way we also saw an amphibian bus from Duck Tours in the ocean. In the inner harbor we had a nice view on the USS Cassin Young, a Destroyer from the Second World War and the USS Constitution, the oldest warship of the US. This ship was nicely renovated and you have the possibility to visit it. The Boston Harbor Cruise company makes a stop at the Charlestown Navy Yard.

Met ons dagkaartje van "Old Town Trolley Tours" hebben we ook een bon gekregen voor een haven rondvaart. Op de eerste foto zie je de stad vanaf het bovendek. Het was een mooie dag, zeer zonnig en de oceaan was zo glad als een spiegel. Zelfs de speedboat Godzilla vaarde de haven binnen zonder golven te maken. Onderweg hebben we ook een amfibie bus van Duck Tours gezien. In de binnenhaven hadden we een goed zicht op de USS Cassin Young, een mijnenveger uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de USS Constitution, het oudste oorlogsschip van de Verenigde Staten. Het schip werd zeer mooi gerenoveerd en je hebt de mogelijkheid het te bezoeken. De Boston Harbor Cruise Company maakt tevens een stop aan de Charlestown Navy Yard.

Boston Public Library

The Boston Public Library is located at Copley plaza in the city center. It's in a green area and this puts the building in a better perspective. The library is impressive with staircases, lion statues, arched ceilings, wall paintings..... The pictures say it all. On this blog we also wrote about the university library of Leuven in Belgium and we can not decide which library we find the most beautiful. They are both architectural treasures.

De Boston Public Library ligt aan Copley Plaza in het centrum van de stad. Het is een groen gebied met een park, dit plaatst het gebouw in een beter perspectief. De bibliotheek is indrukwekkend met zijn trappenhal, standbeelden van leeuwen, gewelfde plafonds, muurschilderingen,... De foto's zeggen alles. Op deze blog hebben we ook geschreven over de universiteit bibliotheek van Leuven in België maar we kunnen niet beslissen welke bibliotheek we het mooiste vinden. Ze zijn beiden architecturale schatten.

Union Oyster House, The oldest restaurant of America, Boston

A friend from Munich recommended us this restaurant that exists since 1826. We absolutely wanted to try the stuffed lobster, a traditional Boston dish. In this restaurant you get a warm feeling. Al the furniture and the bars are in wood. You can eat an oyster at the oyster bar or have a drink at the second bar. This will kill the time when you wait for your table because this restaurant is extremely popular. We could enjoy the bar for one hour with a bottle of wine until our table was ready. We had an interesting conversation with a university dean and had a good stuffed lobster afterwards. You have to try it.

Een vriend uit Munchen heeft ons dit restaurant uit 1826 aanbevolen. We wilden absoluut de opgevulde kreeft, een traditioneel gerecht uit Boston proeven. Dit restaurant met zijn houten interieur en bars straalt warmte uit. Je kan een oester eten aan de oesterbar of van een drankje genieten aan de andere bar. Dit is noodzakelijk terwijl je wacht op je tafel want het restaurant is extreem populair. We hebben een uur genoten van onze fles wijn en een gezellig gesprek met een decaan van een universiteit tot onze tafel klaar was. We raden je aan dit restaurant te proberen.
