New York New York Casino in Las Vegas, the coaster town

New York New York is a special hotel. It tries to give an impression of the skyline of New York with the Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and Brooklyn Bridge. I have to admit that it is really well done. Around the hotel complex, they have a roller coaster. Next to the pictures, we added a video of the full coaster ride, recorded from the 24th floor of the Excalibur hotel. Inside the hotel you find also a Statue of Liberty but made of candy. This was our last Las Vegas article. It will be a few years before we go back.

New York New York is een speciaal hotel. Het probeert een weerspiegeling te zijn van de skyline van New York met het Vrijheidsbeeld, de Empire State, het Chrysler gebouw en Brooklyn Bridge. Ik moet toegeven dat het wel goed gedaan is. Rond het hotel complex rijdt er een achtbaan. In additie tot alle foto's hebben we ook een video van de volledige achtbaan rit toegevoegd. Dit werd opgenomen op het 24ste verdiep van het Excalibur hotel. Binnen in het casino vind je ook een vrijheidsbeeld maar volledig uit snoepgoed gemaakt. Dit was echter ons laatste Las Vegas artikel. Het zal enkele jaren duren voor we terug gaan.

Las Vegas City Center and Aria Casino Resort

The Las Vegas City Center is a new complex with several top hotels, shopping centers, art galleries, restaurants and casinos. The views of these buildings are spectacular and the brands and names present here say it all: the Mandarin Oriental, Aria, VDara, Bulgari, Cartier, Christian Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Versace... The Aria resort and casino has a large hotel with more than 4.000 rooms. It is modern and has style. The Christmas three with its coloured balls was amazing. It was only balls and no three, very special. They have 16 restaurants and a top dessert corner in the casino with high quality cakes and chocolate preparations. The Japanese restaurant Barmasa in the Aria hotel is lead by the famous 3 Michelin star chef Masayoshi Takayama. Each area you walk into is spacious and looks top quality.

Het Las Vegas City Center is een nieuw complex met verschillende top hotels, winkelcentra, kunstgalerijen, restaurants en casinos. Het zicht op dit complex is fantastisch en de aanwezige merken spreken voor zichzelf: Mandarin Oriental, Aria, VDara, Bulgari, Cartier, Christian Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Versace... Het Aria Resort en Casino is een groot hotel met meer als 4.000 kamers. Het is modern en stijlvol. De kerstboom met zijn kleurrijke ballen was ongelooflijk. Het waren enkel ballen, geen boom, een speciaal concept. De Aria heeft 16 restaurants en een dessert restaurant in het Casino, hier bieden ze top kwaliteit taartjes en chocolade bereidingen. Het Japans restaurant Barmasa wordt geleid door de beroemde 3 Michelin sterren chef Masayoshi Takayama. Iedere plaats van het hotel ziet er groots en kwaliteitsvol uit.

The Wynn was already a luxurious top hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, and now it has a sister hotel The Encore. The Wynn is known for its golf course. This is only possible in the USA or the Middle East, a golf course in the dessert. Typical for the Wynn are the special chandeliers. There were Christmas decorations in gardens. From the entrance to the casino, you pass through a shopping area with excellent boutiques.

De Wynn was reeds een luxueus top hotel op de Strip van Las Vegas en nu heeft het een zuster hotel, de Encore. De Wynn staat bekend voor zijn golfterrein. Zoiets is enkel mogelijk in de VS of het Midden Oosten, een golfterrein in de woestijn. Typisch voor de Wynn zijn de speciale lusters. Er waren kerstversieringen in de tuinen. Van de inkom tot aan het casino wandel je langs vele uitstekende boutiques.

Venice in Las Vegas, The Venetian Hotel

All the Americans who don't want to fly to Italy can also enjoy a gondola canal tour in Las Vegas. The hotel has a tower like on the San Marco square. The interior is very classical and the main entrance looks like a palace. This is one of the top quality hotels of Las Vegas. During our holiday in Vegas we went to the "Phantom of the Opera" musical in the hotel. It is expensive but worth every dollar. The singers are top performers and the decors out of this world.

Alle Amerikanen die niet naar Italie willen vliegen kunnen hier ook genieten van een gondel tochtje in Las Vegas. Het Hotel heeft een toren net als op het San Marco plein. Het interieur is zeer klassiek en de hoofdingang lijkt op een paleis. Dit is een van de top kwaliteit hotels in Vegas. Tijdens onze vakantie hebben we ook in dit hotel naar de "Phantom of the Opera" musical gaan zien. Het was duur maar toch zijn geld waard. De zangers zijn uitstekend en de decors onbeschrijflijk.

Our favourite hotel in Las Vegas, The Bellagio

Our favourite hotel on the Strip is the Bellagio. The interior is fabulous and we like the Fountain shows. The hotel is member of Leading Hotels Of The World and this gives you an assurance of quality. When we are there, we always go the dinner buffet. This is also the hotel that hosts the Big Game. The minimum buy in is 80,000$. Most players buy in for more than 200,000$. We like poker but this is not for us mortals.

Ons favoriete hotel op de Strip is de Bellagio. Het interieur is fabelachtig en we houden van de fontein shows. Het hotel is lid van de Leading Hotels of the World and dit geeft u de garantie van kwaliteit. Als we in Vegas zijn, gaan we altijd naar het avond buffet in de Bellagio. Dit is ook het hotel dat gastheer is voor The Big Game. De minimum inzet is 80.000$ maar de meeste spelers starten met meer dan 200,000$. We houden van poker maar dit is niet voor stervelingen zoals wij.

Staying in a fairytale castle, Excalibur Hotel, Las Vegas

After long deliberation, we decided to stay in the Excalibur hotel on the Strip. We selected a cheap hotel because we enjoy playing poker tournaments and the entry fees were low here. The top hotels have higher buy-ins. We play for fun and this disappears when the stakes are too high. Our room, a Spa suite was nice: it had a widescreen TV and jacuzzi. The only negative point was the single glassed windows which resulted in noise from the street, even on floor 24. It was good but next time we will go for a newer hotel.

Na lang twijfelen, beslissen we te logeren in het Excalibur hotel op de Strip. We kozen voor een goedkoop hotel daar we graag een poker tornooitje spelen. Hier was het inschrijfgeld veel lager dan bij de top hotels. Voor ons is poker voor het plezier en dat verdwijnt als de inzet te hoog wordt. Onze kamer, een Spa suite was mooi met een groot plasma scherm en Jacuzzi. Het enige negatieve was het enkel glas waardoor je lawaai hoorde van op straat, 24 verdiepingen lager. Het was goed maar de volgende keer kiezen we toch voor een nieuwer hotel.

Old Egypt in the Luxor Hotel, Las vegas

In Las Vegas everything needs to be big. The most famous hotels on the Las Vegas Boulevard or the so called "Strip" are all top attractions. If it is your fist time in Vegas, you need to foresee two days just to visit the most spectacular hotels. You don't even have to spend any money to do this. The Luxor Hotel is 15 years old but still looks very good. At the front of the hotel you find a Sphinx. To give you an idea of the size of this hotel, it has more than 4.400 rooms. We stayed in here in 2006 and were pleased. Now this is one of the better priced hotels on the strip. We can recommend it.

In Las Vegas moet alles groot zijn. De meest beroemde hotels op de Las Vegas Boulevard, de zogenaamde "Strip" zijn allemaal top attracties. Als het de eerste keer is dat je naar Las Vegas gaat moet je zeker twee dagen voorzien om hotels te bezichtigen. Je hoeft zelfs geen geld op te maken om dit te doen. Het Luxor hotel is 15 jaar oud maar ziet er nog steeds goed uit. Aan de voorzijde van het hotel staat een enorme Sphinx. Om u een idee te geven van de grote van het hotel, het heeft meer dan 4.400 kamers. We verbleven hier in 2006 en waren tevreden. Nu is dit een van de beter geprijsde hotels an de Strip. We kunnen het aanbevelen.

Copley Fairmont Hotel, Boston

On our USA and Canada trip, we visited many Fairmont hotels. This hotel in Boston was for us the most impressive. The hotel opened in 1912. On the pictures you see the reception hall and the Oak Bar. Boston Magazine has awarded the title of best bar of Boston to the Oak Bar. Here, you can enjoy a Martini or cocktails.

Op onze reis naar de Verenigde Staten hebben we veel Fairmont hotels bezocht. Dit hotel in Boston was het meest indrukwekkende. Het opende zijn deuren in 1912. Op de foto's zie je de inkomhal en de "Oak Bar". Boston magazine heeft de "Oak Bar" verkozen als beste bar van Boston. Hier kan je genieten van een cocktail of een martini.

Poor experience at Sheraton on the Falls Hotel, Niagara Falls

We had high expectations of the hotel we booked in Niagara Falls. The Sheraton on the Falls has a good reputation and is rated highly on Expedia. We however, were not pleased with this hotel. The waiting times at the check-in were more than 30 minutes, the toilets were not clean and parking was not available in the Hotel (only valet service). We booked a room with a view on the falls and we must admit that if you stand at the window you have a nice view. From in the room or from on the beds you only see threes. The bathroom was so small you could hardly move. If you consider we paid around 400$ a night, it is scandalous. We are not recommending this hotel.

We hadden hoge verwachtingen van het geboekte hotel in Niagara Falls. De Sheraton on the Falls heeft een goede reputatie en goede beoordeling op Expedia. Wij daarentegen waren niet tevreden van dit hotel. De wachttijden aan de check-in waren langer dan 30 minuten, de toiletten waren niet proper en er was enkel valet parking beschikbaar aan het hotel. We hadden een kamer met zicht op de watervallen geboekt en moeten toegeven dat als je aan het raam van de kamer stond je een mooi zicht had. Van uit de kamer zelf of van op het bed zag je enkel bomen. De badkamer was zo klein dat je er amper kon in bewegen. Als je er rekening mee houdt dat wij ongeveer 400$ per nacht betaalden is dit gewoon schandalig. Wij gaan dit hotel zeker niet aanbevelen.

Fairmont Hotel, Le Château Frontenac, Québec

This is the world's most photographed hotel and the Fairmont group is proud of this. We joined the guided tour in this hotel and must admit that the history of this hotel is very interesting and you learn a lot. The staff giving the guided tour are dressed in traditional clothing. We were however more impressed with the exterior of the hotel. The interior is very simple but the tales on the tour are nice. The hotel was built in the 19th century for train travellers going to Vancouver. The hotel received its name in honour of Count Frontenac who avoided the invasion of the English by bluffing Québec would answer the attack with their cannons. They only had one cannon. Until 1972, the chamber maids were obliged to live in the hotel. In 1943, the hotel was the host for the Conference of Québec, which played a decisive role in ending World War II.

Dit is het meest gefotografeerde hotel ter wereld en de Fairmont groep is er trots op. We hebben deelgenomen aan een rondleiding in het hotel en moeten toegeven dat we het zeer interessant vonden en iets hebben bijgeleerd. De gidsen waren gekleed in traditionele kledij. We waren echter meer onder de indruk van de buitenkant van het hotel dan het interieur dat vrij simpel was. Het hotel werd gebouwd in de 19de eeuw voor treinreizigers die naar Vancouver gingen. Het hotel werd genaamd naar Graaf Frontenac die de oorlog met de Engelsen heeft afgewend door te bluffen dat Québec hun aanval ging beantwoorden met kanonnen. Ze hadden echter maar 1 kanon dat werkte. Tot 1972 dienden alle kamermeisjes in het hotel te wonen. In 1943, was het hotel gastheer voor de Conferentie van Québec, die een belangrijke rol speelde in het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
