It snowed the whole night and a large part of the day. We should not forget that we are still in the fall. The official winter still has to start. It seems like we are living in Austria, Switzerland or Canada. But no, this is our garden in Zoetermeer, The Netherlands. A country where it normally doesn't snow. We received about 15 cm in one day.
Het heeft de volledige nacht en een groot deel van de dag gesneeuwd. We mogen niet vergeten dat het nog herfst is en de winter nog moet aanvangen. Het lijkt wel alsof we leven in Oostenrijk, Zwitserland of Canada. Maar nee, dit is onze tuin in Zoetermeer, Nederland. Een land waar het bijna nooit sneeuwt. We kregen vandaag 15 cm op 1 dag.
On Wednesday December 1, I was on my way to Munich for a business trip. It's 6 am and still dark but the first thing I notice is the huge Christmas tree in frond of the departure hall of Schiphol. It seems they want to celebrate Christmas early this year in Amsterdam. The decorations in the airport were also very beautiful.
Op woensdag 1 december, was ik op weg naar München voor een zakenreis. Om 6 uur 's morgens was het nog donker maar ik merkte onmiddellijk de grote kerstboom op voor de vertrekhal. Het ziet er naar uit dat Kerst dit jaar vroeg wordt gevierd in Amsterdam. De decoraties in het luchthavengebouw waren ook zeer mooi.
The Japanese restaurant Shirasagi in the "Stadhouderslaan" in "Den Haag" is one of our favourite restaurants of the city. It is already listed for many years in the Michelin Guide. The interior is modern, simple and somewhat cold. The food is very good. We personally like the Sashimi and the Sushi. Sometimes we also try warm dishes like the King Crab or Wagyu beef. The wagyu is a traditional Japanese high quality beef from massaged cows which makes the meat more tender.
Het Japans restaurant Shirasagi in de Stadshouderslaan in Den Haag is een van onze favoriete restaurants van de stad. Het staat reeds verschillende jaren vermeld in de Michelin Gids. Het interieur is strak en modern, maar ook wat koud. Het eten is zeer lekker. Wij persoonlijk houden van de Sashimi en de Sushi. Soms nemen we ook een warm gerecht zoals de Koningskrab of de Wagyu steak. De Wagyu steak is een traditioneel Japans rundvlees van gemasseerde koeien. Dit maakt het vlees veel malser.
With the colleagues from our department we visited the Peace Palace in The Hague. This is the International Court of Justice of the United Nations. The building is owned by the Carnegie Foundation. It holds the Permanent Court of Arbitrations for conflicts between countries or groups against a country. The building was completed in 1913. With the start of the First World War, the court received a lot of criticism because war was contradictory to the goals of this institute. Each member state has contributed to the interior of the building by the means of gifts. The mosaic floor was a gift of France, the gates from Germany, Ming vases from China, a fountain from Denmark, the paintings on the ceilings and the staircases from The Netherlands... It's a pity you are not allowed to take pictures inside the building. It is certainly worth a visit.
Met onze collega's van de afdeling hebben we het Vredespaleis in Den Haag bezocht. Dit is het Internationaal Gerechtshof van de Verenigde Naties. Het gebouw is eigendom van de Carnegie stichting. Hier zetelt het Permanent Hof van Arbitrage voor conflicten tussen landen of groeperingen tegen een individueel land. Het gebouw werd voltooid in 1913. Bij de start van de Eerste Wereldoorlog kreeg dit instituut veel kritiek omdat vrede niet echt mogelijk was tijdens de oorlog. Iedere lidstaat heeft tot het interieur bijgedragen door middel van giften. De mosaieken vloer was een geschenk van Frankrijk, het hek en de ingangspoorten van Duitsland, Ming vazen uit China, een fontein van Denemarken, de schilderijen op het plafond en de trap in de inkomhal kwam van Nederland. Het is spijtig dat je in het gebouw geen foto's mag nemen. Het vredespaleis is zeker een bezoekje waard.
We contacted Edwin of Pingreply for a photoshoot. Our goal, getting some Ballroom pictures for in our living room. The studio was very nice and Edwin and his girlfriend gave us a warm welcome. We had a pleasant afternoon and even got the opportunity to play with the family dog. Thanks for these very nice pictures Edwin.
We hebben Edwin van Pingreply gevraagd voor een fotosessie. Ons doel, enkele Ballroom foto's voor in onze woonkamer. De studio was zeer leuk en Edwin en zijn vriendin hebben ons hartelijk ontvangen. Airplane spotting on a sunny day is always fun. This Sunday the weather was fine and there were many take offs on the Ijweg runway in Hoofddorp. This is probably one of the best places to spot airplanes. It is very close to the runway, you have an open view, a lot of parking possibilities, and on sunny days they sell ice cream and snacks. It is very popular. I also want to share this beautiful field with flowers before all the pictures and videos of the planes taking off. Enjoy it. Vliegtuig spotten is altijd leuk op een zonnige dag. Deze zondag was het goed weer en druk op de startbaan naast de Ijweg te Hoofddorp. Dit is waarschijnlijk een van de beste plaatsen om vliegtuigen te gaan bekijken. Het is dicht bij de startbaan, heeft een open zicht, er zijn parkeermogelijkheden, en op zonnige dagen verkopen ze ijs en snacks. Het is een zeer populaire plaats. Voor we naar de foto's en video van opstijgende vliegtuigen gaan wil ik ook graag een veld vol gele bloemen met u delen. Veel plezier. We were invited by a friend and family member for dinner in Rijswijk. We truly enjoyed our evening with Jan. Like for other first visits to a restaurant we try to write a fair review on our blog. For this restaurant we had high expectations because they have one star in the famous Michelin guide. It is always difficult to compare Michelin restaurants from different countries. It is our impression that restaurants in The Netherlands score lower in our quality assessment than restaurants with the same rating in Belgium and France. At restaurant Paul van Waarden, the food, selected wines and service were good. There was enough space between tables and friendly staff. In our opinion the restaurant needs to work at its price/quality ratio. Some of the products on the menu should not be served in a restaurant with one star.
We waren uitgenodigd op restaurant in Rijswijk door een vriend en familielid. We hebben echt genoten van onze avond met Jan. Zoals bij ieder eerste restaurant bezoek trachten we een objectieve recensie te schrijven op onze blog. Voor dit restaurant hadden we hoge verwachtingen daar ze vermeld staan in de Michelin gids met 1 ster. Het is altijd moeilijk Michelin restaurants uit verschillende landen met elkaar te vergelijken. Het is onze indruk dat Michelin restaurants in Nederland met dezelfde waardering bij ons lager scoren in kwaliteit als in Belgie of Frankrijk. Bij restaurant Paul van Waarden was het eten, de aangepaste wijnen en de service goed. Er was genoeg ruimte tussen de tafels en de bediening was vriendelijk. Naar onze mening dient er gewerkt te worden aan de prijs/kwaliteit ratio. Sommige produkten op het menu horen niet thuis in een sterrenrestaurant.
When driving around in The Netherlands and looking for something to eat, keep an eye on the Toucan. This bird is the symbol of the Hotel chain Van der Valk. Most of these hotels have a restaurant that serves good quality food at reasonable prices. All the hotels are located near highway exits. On Sunday we enjoyed the lunch in Nootdorp. We were surprised that the fried Tiger prawn starter in combination with a prawn Carpaccio was absolutely excellent. The beef Carpaccio was also very good. All restaurants have a high capacity. I can only recommend this chain when you travel around in The Netherlands. It will be very difficult to find something of the same quality for this price.
Als je rondreist in Nederland en je zoekt iets te eten, let dan op de Toekan. Deze vogel is het symbool van de hotelketen Van der Valk. De meeste van deze hotels hebben een restaurant dat goede kwaliteit serveert tegen redelijke prijzen. Alle hotels liggen dicht bij autosnelweguitritten. Vorige zondag genoten we van de lunch in de Van der Valk te Nootdorp. We waren echt onder de indruk van de gefrituurde Gamba combinatie met Gamba Carpaccio als voorgerecht. De rundscarpaccio was ook zeer goed. Ik kan deze restaurants zeker aanbevelen als je rondreist in Nederland. Het zal zeer moeilijk zijn iets beter te vinden aan deze prijzen.
