La Crucecita Catholic Church of Huatulco

This is a very small church and the only one we have visited in Mexico until now. We were surprised that it was so clean and the paintings looked brand new. The church is only 10 years old and this explains a lot. The town claims to have the largest ceiling painting in the world of the Virgin Maria. Here in Mexico called the Virgin of Guadalupe. It was a hot day, the flowers in the front of the church gave a special feeling.

Deze kleine kerk is de enige die we hebben bezocht in Mexico. We waren verrast dat alles zo proper was en de schilderwerken leken net nieuw. De kerk is slechts 10 jaar oud en dat verklaart veel. Men heeft hier het grootste plafondschilderij ter wereld van de Heilige Maagd Maria. Hier in Mexico ook de "Virgin of Guadalupe" genoemd. Het was een hete dag, en de bloemen in de voorgrond van de kerk zorgen een aangename sfeer.

Close to heaven in Huatulco, Mexico

Close to heaven you can read on this welcome board at the beach of Huatulco. We have to admit it is a picturesque town with palm trees, flowers and colourful houses. However there is also a lot of poverty in the local community. The daily minimum salary is 5 dollar. It is like time stood still, manual labour in the textile industry and people working in the street without support of machines. We started our Mexican encounter with a taste of Mezcal. This is a Mexican alcoholic drink from the Maguey plant, a type of cactus. You drink it like Tequila, first pure lemon, than Mezcal and than lemon again. Some of the bottles have a worm or scorpion inside. I am sure that if you drink enough of Mezcal that you will come close to heaven for a while. It was a warm day and after visiting town, we went for a boat trip along the coastline line.

Dicht bij de hemel, lees je op het welkomstpaneel aan het strand van Huatulco. We moeten toegeven dat het een gezellig stadje is met palmbomen, bloemen en kleurvolle huizen. Aan de andere kant is er ook zeer veel armoede bij de lokale bevolking. Het minimum loon is 5 dollar per dag. Het is alsof de tijd heeft stil gestaan, men werkt nog steeds met handbestuurde weefgetouwen in de textiel en mensen werken op straat zonder machinale ondersteuning. We zijn onze Mexicaanse kennismaking begonnen met een proeverij van Mezcal. Dit is Mexicaanse alcoholische drank gemaakt van de Aloë plant, een soort cactus. Je drinkt het als Tequila, eerst pure citroen, dan de Mezcal, en daarna terug de citroen. Sommige van de flessen hebben een worm of schorpioen in de drank. Ik ben er zeker van als je hier genoeg van drinkt dat je inderdaad dicht bij de hemel komt. Het was een warme dag en na ons stadsbezoek hebben we nog een boottochtje gemaakt langs de rotsachtige kust.

New tourist development in Huatulco, Mexico

Huatulco is a small beach town in full tourist development located in the Province of Oaxaca. They are building apartments, hotels and are planning a new shopping centre. It will however take a few years before this is realised. When arriving from the Pacific Ocean, you see a coastline of rock formations. The sea seems very rough when it hits the cliffs. There are also some excellent places to snorkel. The Celebrity Infinity arrived together with the Holland America Rotterdam. When you walk between the two cruise ships you feel very small.

Huatulco is een klein kuststadje in Oaxaca die zich richt op toeristische ontwikkeling. Ze bouwen er appartmenten, hotels en maken plannen voor een nieuw winkelcentrum. Het zal echter een paar jaar duren voor dit gerealiseerd is. Als je Huatulco binnenvaart langs de Stille Oceaan, zie je een ketting van rotsformatie langs de kustlijn. De zee ziet er zeer ruw uit als de golven breken op de klippen. Er zijn ook een paar uitstekende plaatsen voor het snorkelen. De Celebrity Infinity kwam samen aan met de Holland America Rotterdam. Als je tussen deze cruise schepen wandelt voel je toch wel heel klein.
