Visit to the Peace Palace, The Hague

With the colleagues from our department we visited the Peace Palace in The Hague. This is the International Court of Justice of the United Nations. The building is owned by the Carnegie Foundation. It holds the Permanent Court of Arbitrations for conflicts between countries or groups against a country. The building was completed in 1913. With the start of the First World War, the court received a lot of criticism because war was contradictory to the goals of this institute. Each member state has contributed to the interior of the building by the means of gifts. The mosaic floor was a gift of France, the gates from Germany, Ming vases from China, a fountain from Denmark, the paintings on the ceilings and the staircases from The Netherlands... It's a pity you are not allowed to take pictures inside the building. It is certainly worth a visit.

Met onze collega's van de afdeling hebben we het Vredespaleis in Den Haag bezocht. Dit is het Internationaal Gerechtshof van de Verenigde Naties. Het gebouw is eigendom van de Carnegie stichting. Hier zetelt het Permanent Hof van Arbitrage voor conflicten tussen landen of groeperingen tegen een individueel land. Het gebouw werd voltooid in 1913. Bij de start van de Eerste Wereldoorlog kreeg dit instituut veel kritiek omdat vrede niet echt mogelijk was tijdens de oorlog. Iedere lidstaat heeft tot het interieur bijgedragen door middel van giften. De mosaieken vloer was een geschenk van Frankrijk, het hek en de ingangspoorten van Duitsland, Ming vazen uit China, een fontein van Denemarken, de schilderijen op het plafond en de trap in de inkomhal kwam van Nederland. Het is spijtig dat je in het gebouw geen foto's mag nemen. Het vredespaleis is zeker een bezoekje waard.

Shared joy is a double joy*

It's been some good days that passed the last two weeks and very much easier than we expected. Everyone adapted impressively fast to the spartan and tight boat life and it's a bit sad it all went so fast. Two more people in tonight for one more Swedish influenced week on the sea and soon thereafter we'll set off for our four weeks vacation towards Corsica and Italy in mid July. Intense boat life but wonderful to be able to share it with people we love.

A rainy day at the Munich Zoo, Tierpark Hellabrunn

We were unlucky that it was raining when we went to "Hellabrunn Tierpark" in Munich. The zoo is easily reachable by U-bahn and is an ideal attraction when you like animals and walking. Walking trails are well maintained and the zoo has the appearance of a very large park. However sometimes it is difficult to find your way around. Many animals had youngsters this time of the year. The pictures say it all.

We hadden echt pech dat het regende tijdens ons bezoek aan "Hellabrunn Tierpark" in München. Je kan de zoo makkelijk bereiken met de U-Bahn en dit is een ideale daguitstap als je van dieren en wandelen houdt. De wandelpaden zijn goed onderhouden en de zoo heeft de uitstraling van een groot park. Soms is het echter moeilijk je weg in dit doolhof te vinden. Vele dieren hebben jongen gedurende deze periode van het jaar. De foto's spreken voor zich.

Drink a beer in Hofbrauhaus, München

One of the oldest beer breweries and most likely to the most famous in the world is Hofbrauhaus in Munich. In this historical building you find a large hall for evening drinking parties. The restaurant and bar have painted ceilings, wooden furniture, a band playing Bavarian music and the most important, beer in 1 litre pints. Many customers are wearing traditional Bavarian cloths. Each evening you can participate in the 4 hour Beer Challenge, visiting different beer gardens and the Hofbrauhaus. When you complete the 4 hours, you get a certificate indicating you won the Beer Challenge. It's like a mini Oktoberfest. Good luck, enjoy the Bavarian atmosphere and don't drive.

Een van de oudste brouwerijen en waarschijnlijk de meest beroemde in de wereld is het Hofbrauhaus in München. In dit historisch gebouw vind je een grote hal voor bierfeesten die 's avonds plaatsvinden.
